If you are looking for costumes, have you ever check local resale shops. Resale shops have actually gone main-stream; many of them boast “departments” and offer seasonal items like used Halloween costumes for pennies on the dollar.  Resale shops and garage sales are also great for vintage clothes and hats that make up a variety of great items.  I once got a short dress that was all fringe for $5 and made it into a ninja outfit.  It’s nice to be able to use your imagination and see how creative you can be for a few dollars.

4. Dollar/Buck or two buck stors

Believe it or not the dollar store can be a treasure trove of Halloween items.  Actual costumes can be had for a few dollars, pieces of costumes like $1 fancy reading glasses that make you look like an entirely different person (pop the readers out and just use the frames!), hats for firemen, cowboys or pirates and accessories like toy guns, eye patches and swords abound.  The dollar store isn’t just a great resource for potential costumes; you can do one-stop shopping for Halloween decorations and candy at a fraction of what you might pay at a traditional store.

5. Company Catalogs

If you want to get away from giving candy out but want to stay in the spirit of the holiday try catalogs like the Oriental Trading Company.  They have deep discounts on party goods, favors and other give-aways.

6. Local specials

As the holiday approaches watch your local stores for specials.  I used to enjoy “after the holiday sales,” for Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, etc.  Now stores are trying to move more holiday product by marking down stock as it gets closer and closer to the actual holiday.  Watch for 50% – 75% off by Halloween Eve.

7. Hobby Stores

Check out local hobby stores in your area like Micheal’s for low-cost costumes, accessories for costumes (plastic beads, crowns, masks, make-up, etc.).  These stores often offer seasonal decorations, costumes, paper goods, etc. at huge discounts.

8. Sharing costumes

You can keep all costumes from year to year.  Even if your children are resistant to being a lion or clown this year because their brother or sister was last year see if you can trade with family, friends or neighbors.

9. Sports jersies

There are great costumes to be had if you just look in your closet.  Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the sens and leaf  game;  I wore my leaf shirt over my orange long sleeved pumpkin shirt with my beloved striped scarf–My outfit was such a hit with the other fans I decided to make it my Halloween Costume

10. Uniforms

Are you a nurse, doc or person who wears scrubs for a living? There’s a freebie for you right there.

11. Buy after Halloween

Buy stuff after hallaween for next year and keep in basment to use next year. In this way you get stuff in low price.
